Greetings, friends! We are in full swing of Black History Month. We have two stay times scheduled for this week and the opening reception for the 4th Annual Creative Expressions Contest. If you haven't checked out the Story Walks™ in Mattapoisett and Marion, we urge you to check them out during school vacation week.
Story Walks in Mattapoisett and Marion
TTAR has partnered with the Mattapoisett Land Trust to bring you a Story Walk at Dunseith Gardens in Mattapoisett featuring the book Coretta by Coretta Scott King and Illustrated by Ekua Holmes.
This is the autobiography of Coretta Scott King––wife of Martin Luther King, Jr.; founder of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (the King Center); architect of the MLK, Jr. legacy; and global leader in movements for civil and human rights as well as peace. Learn about how a girl born in the segregated deep south became a global leader at the forefront of the peace movement and an unforgettable champion of social change.
Resilience, bravery, and joy lie at the center of this timeless story about fighting for justice against all odds.
Dunseith is a 3 acre park which includes open lawns, specimen trees, benches, covered picnic tables, a gazebo and Salty the Seahorse, a landmark to generations of Mattapoisett visitors. There also is a short trail to a small stream in the northeast corner of the property. Off-street parking is available on the property and is accessed from Route 6.
The Sippican Lands Trust will feature A Day With No Words by Tiffany Hammond, illustrated by Kate Cosgrove at Pierson Woods, which covers 30 acres from Point Road down to Blankenship Cove. Get your trail map here.
This colorful and engaging picture book for young readers shares what life can look like for families who communicate in a nonverbal way, utilizing tools (like tablets) to embrace their unique method of "speaking."
This story highlights the bond between mother and child and follows them on a day where they use a tablet to communicate with others.
The Story Walk at Sippican Lands Trust is generously sponsored by a grant from the Marion Cultural Council.
Story Time with the Kendall Smiley at Plumb Library, Rochester
On Wednesday, February 21 at 3:30 pm, Kendall will read a few books and a small craft will be available. All are welcome to attend.
Story Time with the Excellent Family at Elizabeth Taber Library, Marion
On Thursday, February 22 at 11 AM, join Kate, John, and Owen for a story time featuring books celebrating Black History: The Talking Cloth by Rhonda Mitchell, Curls by Ruth Forman, and I Am Enough by Grace Byers. All are welcome to attend. Please call the library with any questions.
Black History Month Creative Expressions Contest
Please join us for the reception and announcement of winners for the 4th Annual Creative Expressions Contest happening in the Community Room at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library on January 24 at 2 PM. Light refreshments will be served.
This year's theme is African Americans and the Arts. Entries are due on February 22 at 4:00 pm.
"African American art is infused with African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount. African American artists have used art to preserve history and community memory as well as for empowerment. Artistic and cultural movements such as the New Negro, Black Arts, Black Renaissance, hip-hop, and Afrofuturism, have been led by people of African descent and set the standard for popular trends around the world. In 2024, we examine the varied history and life of African American arts and artisans."
Contest Details
*The contest is open to any Jr. or Sr. High School student attending or living in the Tri-Town during the 2024 school year.
*Entries can be of any medium but no larger than 11 x 14 in size.
*Please indicate your name, school, age, and grade on the backside of your art.
*All entries can be dropped off during regular library hours.
*Entries will be displayed as they come in so get yours in early for increased exposure.
*Deadline for submission is February 22 at 4:00 pm.
*Winners will be announced and cash prizes distributed at the opening reception in the Mattapoisett Library Community Room on Saturday, February 24, at 2:00 PM.
